Welcome to the Elders of Niles blog!

We hope you'll follow this blog to keep up to date on the latest news for the seniors and their caregivers in our community.

First, a little history...

Centerville Presbyterian Church is partnering with the City of Fremont’s Human Services Department, along with five other ethnic and faith organizations, in the Community Ambassador Program for Seniors (CAPS).  CAPS is a nationally recognized, locally implemented program whose goal is to empower seniors to understand, choose, & access culturally enriched, affordable services & opportunities that enhance their quality of life.

As Niles residents, I wanted to let you know that Lisa Dutra and I are CAPS Ambassadors, volunteers trained to provide information & referral services to seniors and their families.  We will be sending periodic updates to let you know about services and events that we think will benefit the seniors and families in our community.

I’ve discovered through this training that Fremont has some amazing programs for seniors and families and I have to say, I’m proud of my city for the innovative services they’ve designed.  I feel blessed to be raising my family here and look forward to knowing that as I age, I’ll be surrounded by a supportive community.

Please take the time to reach out to a senior who might need support by passing along this information.

Here is a list of just some of the services/resources that are available:

Transportation – Public Transit, Para Transit (both county and city), Driver Safety, etc.
Housing – Retirement, Assisted Living, Residential Care, Nursing/Rehab Facilities, etc.
Health Issues – Advanced Health Care Directives, Community Health Resource Centers, etc.
Benefits – Medicare, Medical, Social Security, SSI, etc.
Senior Services – Senior Helpline, Multipurpose Senior Services Program, Family Caregiver Support Program, Senior Peer Counseling, etc.

There are many more services available to the elderly and families in our community, and we, as your Community Ambassadors, are here to help you find them!

If you have any questions regarding any of these services that you or someone you love might be in need of, please feel free to call the CAPS line at 510-793-3575, ext. 48 or for more information, go to the CAPS website at www.capseniors.org/.

Much thanks,

Judy Gallegos & Lisa Dutra
